9. Emmanuelle Riva, “Amour”

Few love stories have been as sad as that of Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Riva), two long-married octogenarians. Following a stroke, Anne finds her health continuing to fail, while Georges is faced with impossible choices. Riva tracks Anne’s descent in horrifying detail, going from disabled in a wheelchair to utterly helpless. It can be brutal to watch, but Riva is never less than riveting.
