“I wrote the show for myself, and that was it. [Laughs.] Ironically, I didn’t want to be in the show. The other thing happened where I was fighting against being in the show, and they kind of forced me into it. I was coming off of ‘Book of Mormon’ and wanted a break. I was enjoying being on the other side of things, creating. I had imagined it as somebody else, and the network basically gave me an ultimatum to attach to it if I wanted to do it. It was an honor to be in that position, but it was a question of whether I really wanted to do this right now. I wanted to be with my kid for a little bit. But it all worked out—and the audition process was painless.”
