13. Jean-Louis Trintignant, “Amour”

In 1969, Trintignant was named best actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in the Costa-Gavras classic “Z.” The French actor would go on to star in such beloved films as “A Man and a Woman,” “The Conformist,” and “Red.” But for the last 14 years, Trintignant has all but retired from film, content to perform onstage. The 81-year-old is back in a big way, delivering a gut-wrenching performance as a devoted husband watching his wife descend into dementia in Michael Haneke’s acclaimed film. Though it’s heartbreaking to watch, you won’t be able to look away.
