Cooper sheds any remnants of his “Hangover” image by digging in deep to play Pat Solitano, a former teacher who is struggling to readjust to life after eight months in a mental institution. Whether holding his own opposite the likes of Jennifer Lawrence (as a sex addict–widow with whom he shares sizzling chemistry) and Robert De Niro (as his football-obsessed father) or bursting into fits of rage, Cooper has never been more electric onscreen. Bonus points for his dance moves.
