Playing natural gas representative Steve Butler, Damon just might be the most likable corporate shill ever. It’s easy to understand how the small-town farmers are convinced to sell their land rights to the earnest, friendly Steve. And the audience actually sympathizes somewhat when Steve grows frustrated at the few residents (and one pesky environmentalist) who stand in his way. Damon has always radiated a good-guy nature, which makes his growing doubt about his own actions all the more believable.
