Who better to portray Inspector Javert, the relentless pursuer of Jean Valjean, than the man who embodied steely determination in his Oscar-winning turn in “Gladiator”? Audiences are used to seeing Crowe’s gritty resolve staring at them from movie posters, in films like “L.A. Confidential” and “Master and Commander.” Dogged resolution is what he does best, and Javert, who spends 20 years hunting down escaped convict Valjean, is the epitome of such qualities. Also, as his participation for the last 20 years in the band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts has shown, Crowe can belt a tune.
