7. Hal Holbrook, “Promised Land”

Holbrook is 87 years old yet shows no sign of slowing down, with prominent roles this year in both “Lincoln” and “Promised Land.” The actor, who earned his first Oscar nomination in 2008 for “Into the Wild,” proves to be full of surprises. As Frank Yates, a seemingly simple farmer-teacher who battles Matt Damon’s natural gas representative, Holbrook proves there’s more than meets the eye. While rallying his town against the company, Frank also proves to be decent, helping the reps out and even bringing them to dinner. There is no malice in Frank’s intentions—just a good man fighting for what he believes.
