7. The High and the Mighty (1954)

If you were on a plane that was doomed to crash, you’d probably want John Wayne to be your pilot. That’s exactly what happens in the 1954 film “The High and the Mighty.” When a flight from Hawaii to California develops engine issues half-way through and the pilot (John Sullivan) freaks out, first officer Dan Roman (John Wayne) takes the reigns (or controls, rather). Of course, first officer Roman saves the day, managing to land the plane safely just as it runs out of fuel. Classic.
