The low point for Hathaway’s Fantine is the highlight of this film. After Hathaway transforms herself—losing 25 pounds and her hair—to play the emaciated and degraded factory worker turned prostitute, her rendition of the signature song “I Dreamed a Dream” conveys the character’s lifetime of misery in a single take.
