The evolution of the role of Mame Dennis went from play to film to musical to musical film. Although Rosalind Russell played the lead in both the 1956 “Auntie Mame” stage play and 1958 film adaptation, three different actors were cast for the musical and its subsequent versions. In 1966, the play was adapted into a musical titled “Mame” starring Angela Lansbury (pictured), who won a Tony for her role. Ginger Rogers was cast as the lead in a 1969 West End version. Then in 1974 “Mame” was adapted into a musical film starring Lucille Ball. Take your pick: the vivacious Russell, the accomplished Lansbury, the lovely Rogers, or the comic Ball.
