5. Lindsay Mendez in “Dogfight”

No one wants to play ugly, but Mendez owned the unlikely heroine Rose in Peter Duchan, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul’s musical based on the 1991 film, at Second Stage Theatre. Mendez delivered a star-making performance as a misunderstood young woman grappling with herself and a country at war. And her vocals were, in a word, heavenly.
