7. Susan Pourfar in “Tribes”

Actors often have to acquire new skills for a role, and Pourfar had to learn sign language to portray the slowly-going-deaf Sylvia. She also had to don an English accent and play the piano. The result was one of the most gripping and honest performances of the year.
