The king of late night hosted the Oscars four times in a row from 1979 to 1982 and returned for a fifth in 1984. His friendships with many Hollywood stars from his show “The Tonight Show” made his transition into awards hosting all the more pleasurable, always maintaining a comfortable relationship with his audience. Johnny Carson was a favorite among Oscar hosts for his mix of flattering and self-deprecating humor.
