5. Chris Rock (2005)

Although Chris Rock’s acerbic, biting humor might work for stand-up, it proved inappropriate and upsetting in the context of the Oscars. Throughout the 2005 show, Rock received many audience laughs and even a standing ovation, but his crude attitude went too far for some when he commanded the audience to sit their ass down. Rock even went as far to say the nominated films “sucked” and insulted Jude Law for his acting, for which Sean Penn chastised Rock over.
