After successfully hosting the show twice before, Jerry Lewis seemed a perfect pick for the 1959 Oscars. However the show somehow ended early, leaving Lewis 20 minutes of airtime to fill. In a desperate attempt to keep up the momentum Lewis dragged out the final musical number “No Business Like Show Business” by pulling actors out of the audience to sing and dance with him. After this failed attempt, Lewis ended the show with embarrassing ad-libbing. Maybe it wasn’t all Lewis’ fault, but aren’t comedians expected to be the best at quick improv when all else fails?
