Tatiana Maslany on the "Orphan Black" Writers
Though one can’t imagine “Orphan Black” without Tatiana Maslany’s central performances, she diverts most of the praise to the writers. “What’s great about the writing is it bolsters the story so we can follow these characters and the gimmick, and it’s not that the gimmick is the thing,” she says. “They paint themselves into corners really willingly, and I don’t think they always know how to get out of them.”
One of the most shocking aspects of the Season 1 finale was the cliffhanger the writers gave Alison. No spoilers here, but it’s a testament to Maslany and the writers that the moment plays as a punch in the gut rather than as comedy. Even Maslany admits she was shocked when she first read the script. “I was like, ‘What is happening?’ But Alison lives happiest in denial. She doesn’t have to respond to anything that’s happening around her, just push it down and away. And the great thing is the writers take that and go, ‘What’s the secret that will destroy her internally?’ And then they give it to her.”
