Yelchin admitted that when he first saw a cut of the movie, he was impressed: "There were so many ways that his film could have been really saccharine and melodramatic, and I think Drake went against that every time that he could have gone for it. And I just really respected him for that and appreciated that." Jones said she found the experience of working without a script liberating: "One thing 'Like Crazy' taught me is that the script is one thing, but you have to let that go—it becomes something entirely different when it's just the actors, and you can feel free to invent."
