The AFTRA Foundation today announced the creation of a $50,000 relief fund for active SAG-AFTRA members who need help recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
“Our hearts are behind our actions and, like a true family, the AFTRA Foundation is here to help our members when they need help the most,” AFTRA Foundation President Shelby Scott said in a statement. “We’ve seen great loss and suffering caused by this storm. Helping our members rebuild their lives is the most important work we can do at this time.”
Like the SAG Foundation’s newly created $200,000 Superstorm Sandy Emergency Assistance Fund, which was announced Nov. 5 in partnership with the Screen Actors Guild Motion Picture Players Welfare Fund, the AFTRA Foundation Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund will be administered by the Actors Fund in New York. Emergency aid grants of up to $1,000 will be distributed based on a confidential process that is “aimed at aiding members quickly and effectively as they rebuild and recover from the superstorm,” according to the Foundation.
“This is the type of work the Foundation is devoted to and was designed for,” SAG-AFTRA Co-President Roberta Reardon said in a statement. “We are grateful to all who support us and to the Actors Fund for partnering with us. Our members are strong, talented, generous people. We are proud of them and their resilience, and honored to be able to help in this time of need.”
SAG-AFTRA members who are currently active and have paid their union dues through the May 2012 billing cycle are eligible to apply for grants. To request this assistance, members can call the Actors Fund at 212-221-7300, ext. 119, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
