Casting for a production of "The Pirates of Penzance" on The Peking, South Street Seaport, NYC. Rehearsals begin in April; runs May 1-Oct. 1. Note: This is a very non-traditional production of "The Pirates of Penzance" that will be staged on The Peking, a ship docked at South Street Seaport. Although it uses Gilbert & Sullivan's original work, it has been re-orchestrated to include different musical styles, like rock, rap, and gospel. Actively seeking a multi-ethnic cast; all ethnicities strongly encouraged to attend auditions. All characters must be vocally very strong and versatile. Auditions will be held Mon. Feb. 12 from 10AM-1PM and 2-6PM at New Dance Group, 254 W. 47 St., NYC. Come prepared with pix & resumes and two short contrasting vocal pieces. Seeking—The Pirate King: male (or female in drag), 30s, very athletic, comic, baritone/contralto, a swashbuckler; Frederic: early 20s, extremely handsome, athletic, masculine, strong rock tenor (to B flat), romantic hero; Mabel: early 20s, strong singer, African-American actress, Jennifer Holiday-type sound, strong legit soprano; Ruth: mid- to late 40s, casting non-traditionally as a male in drag, comic, baritone, moves well; Major General: 40s-60s, baritone, should be fatherly, comic, able to rap; Police Sergeant: 30s-40s, over-zealous, eccentric, very strong dancer, bass-baritone; Ensemble: 20s-30s, six men and six women, triple cast as pirates, daughters, and police, comic character actors, strong dance and wide vocal range required, principal understudies will be cast out of the ensemble.
