The musical will be directed and choreographed by Alexander deJong, a dancer who has appeared on Broadway in revivals of "42nd Street" and "My Fair Lady." DeJong, who also wrote the score, co-wrote the book with James Walsh. Casting director Stephanie Klapper ("Dividing the Estate") will be holding auditions in late February and early March for a three-day workshop performance, which will be presented in May in New York City.
"All That Glitters" tells the story of a Depression-era kid from Wisconsin who became one of the most popular entertainers of his time, while struggling against the dark side of his world of glitz and glamour. Three actors will play Liberace at various stages in his life, first as a 10-year-old boy, then a young man, and finally in his 60s. Actors are not required to play the piano for these roles. Other characters from Liberace's personal life and career will also be cast at these auditions.
Equity principal auditions will be held on Monday, February 27, Wednesday, February 29, and Friday, March 2 in New York City. Equity chorus calls for singers and dancers will take place on Monday, March 5. An open call for union and nonunion performers has been added for Monday, March 12. Walsh was working on this musical as early as 2007, when it was called "All That Glitters: The Unauthorized Liberace Musical." Although many stage productions about the legendary performer have been attempted in recent years, none have made it to Broadway. Michael Douglas will star as Liberace in an upcoming film, directed by Steven Soderbergh.
