Austin Resident Receives Equity's Lucy Jordan Humanitarian Award
Connie McMillan, known as the "ultimate theater person" by her friends, was named the recipient of Actors Equity Association's 2012 Lucy Jordan Humanitarian Award on Friday. Created by the Stage Managers Committee in 1992 to commemorate the former Western Region Business Field Rep for which it is named, the honor celebrates an individual in the theatrical community.

"Loving theatre the way I do, I was so grateful to be able to contribute to the profession behind the scenes and I never wanted any recognition since the production is the reward," McMillan said in a statement. "But this honor is most welcome since it comes from other professionals who understand fully what it takes to make the magic happen."

McMillan has maintained a diverse involvement in the city's theater scene for more than 40 years. For 23 years, she was the box office manager for the University of Texas Performing Arts Center, and since 2000, she has worked part-time work for the University Interscholastic League, which hosts the One-Act Play Contest for high schools in the state of Texas. She has also served on the nominating committee for the B. Iden Payne Awards, which recognizes excellence in Austin theater. Additionally, she audio-described live performances of theater and opera for patrons who are blind or have limited vision.

Actors, critics, patrons, and producers nominated her for the award, which will be presented at Equity's Austin/San Antonio membership on Saturday, February 11. It is the only award presented by Equity's Western Regional Board. Actors' Equity Association, founded in 1913, is the oldest performing arts union in the nation and represents more than 49,000 professional stage actors and stage managers.
