Back Stage West has won The Donaldson Award, BPI's highest honor given annually for editorial quality and service. Gina Keena, manufacturing and operations director for Back Stage, Back Stage West, and Shoot, has been named a winner of BPI's President's Award for commitment and excellence.
Back Stage West received its honor for the series "How a Talent Agency Misled and Bilked Some of its Clients": coverage of the Durkin Artists Agency and its owner Debbie Durkin, who may have been operating illegally and without regard for her clients' well-being. Editor Rob Kendt along with Thomas Mills, senior columnist, and Scott Chernoff, columnist, were cited for their investigative coverage.
The stories directly resulted in investigations by SAG, the state labor board, and the city attorney's office, with results still pending.
A BPI employee since 1984, Keena became art and production director for Back Stage's three publications in January 1995. With responsibility for overall production, she quickly and successfully completed the transition from mechancial paste-up to computerized pagination for Back Stage and Shoot.
In 1996, she set up the computer system for BPI's new property, Ross Reports.
Keena also acts as liaison with the publications' printers, and is currently working with Back Stage's marketing department as the magazine prepares to go online via th
