The world premiere musical, which has been in the works for at least five years and once had Aaron Sorkin ("The Newsroom," "The Social Network") attached as a writer, will be directed by Des McAnuff, who co-wrote the book with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. Because "Yoshimi" was not originally written as a concept album, the musical will also feature songs from other Flaming Lips albums including "The Soft Bulletin" and "At War with the Mystics."
McAnuff and Coyne's story is about a young Japanese artist who journeys into a fantastical robot world, where she must contend with a host of evil forces and wages a war against fate. The production will feature multimedia stage effects. Rehearsals begin Tuesday, Sept. 18. and the show runs from Tuesday, Nov. 6 through Sunday, Dec. 16.
Rubin is seeking male and female singers and dancers for the ensemble. The dance style is a mix of contemporary/modern and "street" hip-hop. Singers should also be strong dancers, and dancers should also be strong singer-actors. Martial arts and/or puppeteering experience is a plus for all roles.

Casting director Tara Rubin has cast some of the biggest Broadway shows of the last decade. Her recent Broadway credits include "Ghost The Musical," "One Man, Two Guvnors," "Peter and the Starcatcher," and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Rubin has also cast multiple shows for the La Jolla Playhouse, including the theater's current developmental production of "The Nightingale."
McAnuff was the artistic director for the La Jolla Playhouse from 1983 to 1994, and again from 2001 to 2007. He has directed many regional and Broadway productions, including "Jersey Boys," "Urinetown," and the recent revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar."
