Tara Rubin Casting is casting teen girl ballerinas for a developmental lab production of "Little Dancer," a new musical directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman ("The Scottsboro Boys," "The Producers"), with music, book, and lyrics by the Tony Award-winning duo of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. The workshop runs June 12-29 in New York.

Ballerinas should be able to play 13- to 18-year-old girls. (The casting team is not seeking adults for these positions.) Auditioning performers must have excellent dance skills and spirited personalities, and must be able to dance en pointe and sing.

An Equity chorus call will be held Friday, May 4 in New York City. For more information and audition details, view the full casting notice at BackStage.com. (Subscription required.) These auditions are for Equity members, but nonunion dancers may also be seen if time permits.

The project has been in the works since 2010, when a staged reading was presented by Lincoln Center Theater. The then-untitled musical also had a month-long workshop in June 2011 at LCT. Inspired by true events and set in the harsh and colorful backstage world of the Paris Opera Ballet, the piece focuses on the relationship between a young ballerina and 19th-century French painter and sculptor Edgar Degas.

Casting director Tara Rubin has cast some of the biggest Broadway shows of the last decade. Her current Broadway credits include "Ghost The Musical," "One Man, Two Guvnors," "Peter and the Starcatcher," and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."
