Attendees at “The Hobbit” panel were treated to a fifteen minute behind the scenes video. Stars such as Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, and Elijah Wood discussed their roles and their place in Middle Earth. Director Peter Jackson said the new epic was “made for fans, by fans.” After Jackson's solid interpretation of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy though, fans shouldn't need much reassuring. To put the icing on the cake, Jackson also shared a twelve-minute clip with scenes from the film. We can only hope that it will be available online soon. Given the fact that Jackson has been generous by creating production vlogs about the film for fans, hopefully, he will share this clip in the near future.
Marvel made a few big announcements. “Guardians of the Galaxy” is official, and they showed off an image of Rocket Raccoon with the news. They followed that with talks about “Ant-Man.” They teased at first but soon surprise guest Edgar Wright took the stage and showed some not quite complete test footage for the film. It's been rumored to be coming down the pipeline for a while, but it wasn't on Marvel's slate. Or so we thought. Wright will taking the helm on the humorous movie.
After that surprise, Robert Downey, Jr. joined Marvel President Kevin Fiege on stage to discuss “Iron Man 3.” They revealed that Ben Kingsley would be joining the cast as the Mandarin. Feige emphasized that this only an “Iron Man” film and does not tie in with “The Avengers.”
Also, the first teaser trailer for Legendary's new “Godzilla” dropped in Hall H today, and crowds responded to it enthusiastically!
The convention wraps up on Sunday; the last day tends to be quieter, but you just never know what the studios will announce.
