CAROLYNE BARRY'S COMMERCIAL ACTING WORKSHOPS

In her 30-plus years in the commercial business, Barry has appeared in more than 400 national television commercials, and she's been an acting coach for the past 19 years. Barry and her staff of coaches teach 12 separate commercial workshops, including beginning, intermediate, and advanced acting and commercial technique, improvisation workshops, an agent's showcase tape, beginning acting workshops, and a class on "creating your physical package" for commercial/theatrical auditions. TERRY BERLAND'S COMMERCIAL WORKSHOP

"The commercial is actually the purest form of film," Berland told Back Stage West. "It tells a story and evokes an emotion in a very short time." Berland should know: She's been casting commercials for 22 years, co-authored Breaking Into Commercials from Penguin USA, and is now called on nationally to teach commercial acting. In L.A., she offers a six-week on-camera commercial workshop, limited to 14 students, for $350, as well as a "weekend boot camp." CASH ON COMMERCIALS

Susan Cash, a familiar commercial face (Hughes Market commercials), offers a six-hour class for beginners. The class covers how to market yourself, auditions, selling with believability, and discovering your commercial type. Classes also include scene work. She also offers private coaching. DONOVAN & HARDWICK CASTING COMMERCIAL CLASS

Busy film, television, theatre, and commercial casting directors Michael Donovan and Jeff Hardwick teach a three-week commercial technique class alongside Marjorie Bowman, another commercial CD. Classes are small and taught on-camera. Donovan, whose background is as an actor/director, also offers private coaching both commercially and theatrically. MEGAN FOLEY'S COMMERCIAL INTENSIVE WORKSHOP

Foley offers a one-day commercial workshop that covers all aspects of the audition. It takes place one Saturday every month and is limited to 10 students. It includes on-camera work and feedback from instructors Foley and Chuck Marra. Cost is $150. (818) 755-9384.

HEY, I SAW YOUR COMMERCIAL!

Michael Pointer, who has been a working actor for 16 years and has appeared in more than 100 commercials, teaches an ongoing, on-camera commercial workshop, Hey, I Saw Your Commercial, for adults (18 and over). Pointer said that his students "learn more in four weeks than in most eight- to 12-week courses." A free career counseling hotline is available to his students. ORANGE COUNTY COMMERCIAL ACTING WORKSHOP

Ron Michaelson, a working actor for 20 years, teaches beginning and advanced on-camera commercial classes. The school, based in Tustin, also offers an improv class, a cold reading technique class, and scene study for film and TV. Private coaching is also available for kids and teens. ALEXIA ROBINSON'S WORKSHOP FOR ACTORS

Robinson—with 20 years of industry experience and Roy London's tutelage under her belt—offers Saturday commercial workshops for adults, kids, and teens in N. Hollywood. She said that 80 percent of her workshop referrals come from agents, managers, casting directors, and former students, and her semi-private classes are limited to eight students. All her workshops are for beginner and intermediate levels. The workshop culminates with an industry day for students to be seen by top industry professionals. Robinson also offers a three-week intensive for adults, and a four-week workshop for kids and teens. Private coaching for theatrical auditions is available by referral only. SHINING STARS

This studio teaches commercial acting workshops for children and teens. Dinah Kessler, a former casting director and talent agent, has developed what she described as a "program geared to giving actors all the necessary tools for a long and successful commercial acting career." Kessler also emphasized that she individually tapes students' on-camera work. Classes include on-camera work, audition technique, improv, cold reading, script analysis, and marketing advice.
