Creative fundraising will be the name of the game at "Nocturnal Commissions," a play auction to benefit New Dramatists. Playwrights will be both on hand and online (by phone, fax, and e-mail) to create new works on the spot for the highest bidders.
The evening will begin with "The Great Play Auction" at 7 pm. The highest bidders will get to commission new plays which will be rehearsed and performed at 9 pm. Participating playwrights include Karen Hartman, Arlene Hutton, David Lindsay-Abaire, Ruth Margraff, Diana Son, Mac Wellman, and Doug Wright. Then, "Wired (and Wireless)" will allow guests to bid on new monologues to be written by New Dramatists' out-of-state playwrights; delivered within the hour by fax, e-mail, or telephone. Playwrights include Bridget Carpenter, Erik Ehn, Anne García-Romero, Julie Hébert, Octavio Solis, and Caridad Svitch. Finally, there's "The Love Letter Booth," where guests will pay for a consultation with a "Valentine Specialist" who will create a love letter, "Dear John" letter, or letter of revenge—whatever the guest's heart desires.
"Nocturnal Commissions" will take place at New Dramatists, 424 W. 44th St., on Mon., Feb. 12. Doors will open at 6 pm. Tickets are $20, and guests are encouraged to purchase them in advance; call (212) 757-6960.
