The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center recently opened submissions this week for their 2013 cycle of the National Playwrights Conference. Each July, the Center invites eight playwrights to an intensive, month-long laboratory at their grounds in Waterford, Conn. The conference includes weeklong rehearsals and culminates in two script-in-hand readings of previously unproduced work.
Accepted playwrights range from those already working on Broadway to directors and actors involved in film. According to the Conference website, “Virtually every major American playwright has been part of the Conference,” including Adam Rapp, Lanford Wilson, Wendy Wasserstein, and August Wilson. Productions that were nurtured at the conference include "Avenue Q," "In the Heights," and "The House of Blue Leaves."
In addition, the Conference also hosts several writers-in-residence, who work independently on their own special projects. Previous residents have included Lisa Loomer and Tracy Scott Wilson.
Submissions are accepted through October 26, 2012, and the application fee is $35.
