Funny Ha Ha?: Improv from Process to Product

This class imparts the technique for approaching and performing improv, whether it's for stage, film, or television. It focuses on both the usefulness of improv to develop scenework and on the ability of an actor to further their career performing improv as a final product.

SPEAKER BIOS


Ryan Karels
Ryan Karels has been at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre since 2001, performing with KROMPF and on Harold night with Decoster, Creep, and Filth. He is an Artistic Associate of Les Freres Corbusier (Hell House, Heddatron, Boozy, The Franklin Thesis) and was in the original Off-Broadway cast of Gutenberg, The Musical! Ryan has taught improvisation at the Williamstown Theatre Festival for the past three seasons and last year directed I Stalk You on Facebook at LIU, CW Post. He grew up in North Dakota and graduated from Yale University.

Shannon O'Neill
Shannon O'Neill is a writer, performer, and teacher at the UCB Theatre. Over the past eight years she has participated in a plethora of shows, including Braintown, Sketch Show, NeoTokyo Girl Crush 2040, The Dogs of St. Christopher, Double X, Soundtracks Live, Laid UP!, and Tick Tick Tick. Shannon has been a member of several House teams at the theatre, including Optimist International, Mailer Daemon, and fwand. Shannon performs every Friday night at UCBT with the super-group The Stepfather's and on local college campuses as a member of the national UCB Touring Company. Shannon was raised in Malvern, Penn., and attended Millersville University, where she earned a degree in Broadcasting. Shannon has worked for Late Show with David Letterman, The Cosby Show, The Chris Rock Show, and 60 Minutes II. She currently resides in Queens with her husband, Aidan, and their adopted dog, Luz.

Lennon Parham
Lennon Parham currently performs at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in NY in the comedy improv shows Asssscat 3000 and Reuben Williams. She is a member of the UCBT Touring Company and has been teaching at the UCB training center for two years, including a special class for improvising in character. Currently she is performing her one-woman show, She Tried To Be Normal, a collection of comedic characters. For more than a year, Lennon performed weekly as Nomi Malone in the hit stage show Showgirls: the Best Movie Ever Made. Ever! She also co-created and performed The Adventures of Lock & Kay, a two-woman show about the rise of a pop superstar duo. Previous New York improv and sketch credits include: The Shoves, Dillinger, and We Built This City on Rent Control (Second City NY). NY theatre credits include: Elephant in the Room! (NY Fringe), Crepuscule, Hold the Fat, Until We Find Each Other, and many other workshops with the O'Neill Playwrights Conference, Stage 13, and MCC's young playwrights group. Film and television credits include: Confessions of a Shopaholic, Splinterheads, Pretty Bird, Hysterical Psycho, The Dueling Accountant, and AV Club. She holds a BS in Theatre from the University of Evansville in Indiana and taught French for two years at TL Weston High School in Greenville, Miss., with Teach for America.
