‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder’ Continues Award Season Reign at OCC Theatre Awards

“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder” has been enjoying more recognition as awards season rolls on. The musical comedy has garnered four wins at the 64th annual Outer Critics Circle Theatre Awards, including nods for actor Jefferson Mays and director Darko Tresnjak; “Bullets Over Broadway” and “The Glass Menagerie” are close as well, with three each.

Nick Cordero and Marin Mazzie both took outstanding featured actors in a musical for their performances in “Bullets Over Broadway.”

Bryan Cranston took outstanding actor with his Broadway debut “All the Way” (outstanding new Broadway play winner), wherein he plays the former United States president Lyndon B. Johnson; he beat out Ian McKellen in “No Man’s Land.” Cherry Jones from “The Glass Menagerie” was the winner in the outstanding actress category beating out Rebecca Hall (“Machinal”), Jessica Hecht (“Stage Kiss”), Estelle Parsons (“The Velocity of Autumn”) and Tyne Daly (“Mothers and Sons”).

Outstanding revival went to Neil Patrick Harris’ “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”

Despite the announcement of the play’s May 18 closing, “The Bridges of Madison County” composer Jason Robert Brown was awarded with the outstanding new score award; “Bridges” actor Kelli O’Hara was nominated in the outstanding actress in a musical category, but lost to Audra McDonald (“Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill”).

The special achievement award was presented to Bill Berloni for his work with his dogs in
“Annie,” “The Open House,” “The Threepenny Opera,” “Bullets Over Broadway,” and “Lady Day,” as well as for the 300 dogs he has found in homeless shelters and turned into theater stars over his years in the business.
