L.A. Ovations Awarded

LA Stage Alliance presented its 2003 Ovation Awards at a ceremony at the Orpheum Theatre Nov. 23, hosted by Lily Tomlin. The recipients are:

World Premiere Play: August Wilson, August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean, CTG: Mark Taper Forum; Randy Schulman, La Gioconda, Stages Theatre Center and The Collective; Bryan Davidson, War Music, Playwrights' Arena and Echo Theatre Company. James A. Doolittle Award for Leadership in the Theatre: Ed Waterstreet, co-founding artistic director of Deaf West Theatre.

The Career Achievement Award: Gordon Davidson, artistic director of the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum, producing director of CTG: Ahmanson Theatre's subscription season.

The Ovation Awards are administered by LA Stage Alliance (formerly Theatre LA), a nonprofit association of theatres, performing arts organizations, and producers. It operates discounted advertising programs in major Los Angeles media, half-price ticketing programs on the Web (WebTIX), membership programs for patrons and enthusiasts, an annual conference exploring the business side of performing arts (SRO Conference), advocacy and lobbying efforts at the local, state, and national levels, and the annual Ovation Awards honoring the best in Los Angeles theatre. LA Stage Alliance also publishes LA Stage, a bimonthly magazine covering performing arts throughout Southern California.
