‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’ and ‘Scandal’ Lead NAACP’s Image Award Noms

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has announced its nominees for the 45th annual Image Awards with “Lee Daniels' The Butler,” and hit ABC television series “Scandal,”starring Kerry Washington, coming out on top. “Scandal” garnered five nominations in three categories, including outstanding drama series. Washington is up for an outstanding actress in a drama series award for her role on the show, about a crisis management “fixer” in Washington D.C.

“Butler” is up for six categories and its actors David Oyelowo, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Terrence Howard all nailed nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a motion picture (one of two nominations in that category for Howard, who was also recognized for his work in "The Best Man Holiday"). Lee Daniels received an outstanding directing in a motion picture nomination alongside Steve McQueen for “12 Years a Slave,” which was also tapped for outstanding motion picture. Other nominees in the same category include “Fruitvale Station” and “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” about the late South African political leader.

Don Cheadle is also up for an award for outstanding actor in a comedy series for his work on “House of Lies,” Oprah Winfrey for outstanding supporting actress in a motion picture for “Butler,” and “12 Years a Slave’s” Lupita Nyong’o received recognition in the outstanding supporting actress category. And Angela Bassett received three nominations for her work on TV in "American Horror Story: Coven" and "Betty & Coretta," and in the film "Black Nativity."
