“I love the show, I love the music and I love the role of Annie,” Crawford told Today. “And I’m so excited to work with the dog!” The role of Sandy has not been cast. October will mark the launch “Annie’s Search for Sandy.”
When asked why she thought she had been cast, the 11-year-old replied, “I think I relate to Annie because we’re both spunky.” Crawford also played Debbie in “Billy Elliot.”
The production will be directed by three-time Tony Award-winner James Lapine and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blakenbuehler. Based on Harold Gray’s newspaper character “The Little Orphan Annie,” the musical features tunes by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Thomas Meehan.
The Tony-award winning musical first opened in April 1977 at the Alvin Theatre and ran for almost six years, playing 2,377 performances. It went on to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the Grammy for Best Show Album, and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score.
“Annie” premieres this fall at a Nederlander theater to be announced.
