HBO's "Luck" is not doing well when it comes to playing the ponies.

A third horse has died on the show's Southern California set, prompting an investigation by the American Humane Association. "Luck" will continue filming its second season, but only scenes that do not involve horses.

The drama is set in the world of gambling and horse racing, often using live horses in its scenes at the Santa Anita Park in Arcadia Park. On Tuesday, a horse was injured and euthanized despite passing a heath and safety examination. According to The New York Times, while on her way to a racetrack stable, the horse reared, flipped over backwards, and struck her head on the ground. Humane euthanasia was deemed appropriate after she received immediate medical attention.

An AHA safety representative was present when the accident took place, reported Entertainment Weekly. An AHA investigation is underway.

The advocacy group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals posted this statement on its blog: "We think—and we hope law enforcement agrees—that the way in which the horses were treated by the production company, the trainer, and the veterinarian warrants a swift and thorough investigation before yet another horse dies. Horses may grab our attention, but these animals are not willing participants in the entertainment industry."

It was revealed last month that two horses broke their legs and were euthanized during production of the show's first season in 2010 and 2011.
