The New York Drama Critics Circle awarded West-End import "Matilda The Musical" and Christopher Durang's "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" best musical and best play, respectively, on Friday. No best foreign play was awarded.
"Matilda" and "Vanya" received Tony Award nominations for best musical and best play for the Tony Awards earlier this week, and as the members of the Circle vote on the Tonys as well, this honor adds to each of the shows' frontrunner status.
The award for best play carries a $2,500 cash prize, made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation. In addition to the best play and musical awards, the Circle designated special citations to Soho Rep, New York City Center's Encores!, and John Lee Beatty. The awards will be presented in a private ceremony on May 13 at 54 Below.
The Circle comprises 26 drama critics from the New York metropolitan area and has given out these awards every year since 1936.
