ABC Family has picked up the scripted drama series "Three Moons Over Milford" with an eight-episode order.
The show, produced by Three Moons Prods. in association with Touchstone Television, is described as a quirky drama set in a small town whose residents take their lives to the extreme -- quitting jobs, indulging vices and basically living as if today were their last -- upon learning that a cosmic explosion is threatening Earth's existence. Cast members include Sam Murphy, Nora Dunn, Samantha Quan and Rob Boltin.
"Three Moons" is set to begin production in the spring, with a possible premiere date in the summer.
ABC Family is making a big push into the world of scripted drama series. The network recently picked up two other drama series: "Kyle XY," which centers on a mysterious teenage boy who appears to be a newborn based on his actions, and "Balancing Act" (working title), about a young cop who moves his family back to the inner-city neighborhood where he was raised in the hopes of making a difference. In addition, new episodes of the drama "Beautiful People" are set to premiere in March.
Just last week, the network's first-ever original scripted drama, "Wildfire," set a network viewership record with its second-season premiere. A total of 2.3 million viewers tuned in to that show Jan. 2 -- outperforming any season premiere in the history of the channel.
"On the heels of 'Wildfire's' fantastic season premiere, it's great to pick up yet another show that will make ABC Family a destination for originals of the highest quality," ABC Family president Paul Lee said.
"Three Moons" is executive produced by Holly Goldberg Sloan and Gary Rosen, with Jon Amiel consulting. The pilot was written by Howard Chesley and Jon Boorstin, who also will serve as co-executive producers.
