Brief Theatre History/Statement of Philosophy: Originally the carriage house for Key West's Oldest House, circa 1829, the Red Barn Theatre seemed destined for a theatrical future. The Barn was used in the 40's and 50's as a theatre space with Tennessee Williams himself gracing the stage every now and then. After a period of dormancy a spirited group of actors renovated the space and opened in 1980 as the Red Barn theater. Over the years the Red Barn has prospered and grown into a cultural corner stone for the community, utilizing the rich literary heritage offered by the island. Shel Silverstein, Jerry Herman, Jimmy Buffet, Richard Wilbur among others became involved often offering new works and regional premiers for production. Now in its 26th year the Red Barn continues to offer the best professional theatre South Florida has to offer-an exciting array of musicals, comedies, dramas, play readings and children's shows. 5-6 shows are produced each season in this 88 seat house from November – June. Regional premieres are produced such as When Pigs Fly, Nunsense 2, the Big Bang, as well as World Premiers by Shel Silverstein, richard Wilbur, Poet Laureate of the US, Mellissa Manchester among others.
