"Smash" stars Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Anjelica Huston, Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee, and Jack Davenport. But its renewal is especially good news for New York actors, because it means the series will continue to hire local talent from stage and screen for another season. TV Line reports that NBC has ordered at least 15 episodes for the new season, which will "ultimately follow the workshop production to Broadway."
Since premiering after the Super Bowl this year, "Smash" is NBC's highest-rated drama among adults ages 18-49 and averages 7.7. million total viewers. That nearly doubles NBC's ratings from last season, when the network averaged around 4 million viewers or less in the same timeslot.
Based on an idea from executive producer Steven Spielberg, the pilot was written by playwright Teresa Rebeck ("Seminar") and directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer ("Spring Awakening," "American Idiot"). Original songs for the series are written by Tony and Grammy Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman ("Hairspray," "Catch Me If You Can"), who serve as executive producers as well.
"Smash" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC. Read recaps of "Smash" on BackStage.com.
