Fully half of the 12 recipients of this year's National Endowment for the Arts/Theatre Communications Guild (NEA/TCG) Career Development Programs for Directors and Designers are from the New York City area, the organizations announced in September.
In addition to providing each recipient with $17,500 in direct support, the programs help beginning designers and directors to expand their crafts, by putting them in working situations with other, more experienced, professionals. As Ben Cameron, executive director of TCG, has said, "Nurturing a new, emerging generation of artists is one of the theatre field's most urgent priorities. … The investment in these artists will help insure the vitality of the field in the years to come."
Soon the groups will begin selecting next year's recipients; application deadlines for the 2001 programs are in January. Interested designers and directors may request guidelines and application materials by writing to Career Development Programs, TCG, 355 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10017 or by e-mailing the request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The guidelines are also available for downloading at www.tcg.org.
