"Once," the musical based on the 2006 indie film about an Irish street singer and a Czech emigre, has garnered the most nominations for the Lucille Lortel Awards for outstanding achievement Off-Broadway. The show opened Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop earlier this season and just transferred to a Broadway run at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. "Tribes," a British play by Nina Raines about a deaf young man in conflict with his hearing family, received the most nominations for a play with six.

The Lortels, named for the legendary producer, are the first New York theater award nominations in a busy spring season of accolades. The Outer Critics Circle Awards, Drama Desks, Obies, and many others will be making their announcements in the weeks ahead, culminating with the Tony Awards on June 10.

The nominees were chosen by a committee composed of representatives from the Off-Broadway League, Actors' Equity Association, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, theater journalists and academics, who will also vote for the winners. The nominees will be honored at a cocktail reception on April 16 at Planet Holloway in Times Square. The awards will be presented on May 6 at NYU Skirball Center in a ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. Members of the general public may buy tickets starting at $75 via phone at (212) 352-3101, online at www.nyuskirball.org, or at the Skirball Center box office, 556 LaGuardia Place, NYC.
