‘Pippin,’ ‘Kinky Boots’ Lead Outer Critics Circle Winners

“Pippin” and “Kinky Boots” won outstanding revival and new Broadway musical, respectively, at the Outer Critics Circle Awards. Winners were announced on Monday morning.

The Diane Paulus-helmed revival earned seven awards, including director, choreographer, lead actress, featured actor, and featured actress. The Cyndi Lauper tuner took home the prizes for score and lead actor, bringing its count to three.

The Outer Critics Circle awards the best in Broadway and Off-Broadway theater. Christopher Durang’s “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” earned the title of outstanding new Broadway play, while “My Name is Asher Lev” received the same honor for Off-Broadway. The acclaimed David Byrne musical “Here Lies Love” earned outstanding Off-Broadway musical. “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” took home outstanding revival of a play.

A special award will also be given to the Irish Repertory Theatre. The awards will be presented in a May 23 ceremony at Sardi's, with Judy Kaye, Audra McDonald, Michael McGrath, Donna Murphy, and Tonya Pinkins serving as presenters.
