Producers Guild Will Continue to Nominate 10 Movies for Top Film Award
Two years ago, the PGA followed the lead of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which began nominating 10 movies for best picture, and expanded its top film producer award to 10 nominees. But while the Academy has introduced a new voting procedure that could result in anywhere from five to 10 nominees in its best picture category at the next Oscars, this time the PGA will not fall into lockstep and has decided to continue to nominate ten films and their producers.
The PGA also announced Tuesday that it is expanding its TV reality category, splitting what had been one award into three separate categories, recognizing nonfiction shows, competition shows and live entertainment/talk shows. In addition, national offerings in sports, news, children's programming and web series will also all be rewarded with trophies during the next PGA Awards ceremony.
After an internal review led by PGA vp television Hayma "Screech" Washington, the Producers Guild board of directors recently approved the addition of several new competitive categories in order to better address the scope and diversity of work by reality and other specialty television and new media producers.
Polls for TV series and specials will close Nov. 7; the polls for theatrical and animated motion pictures and longform television will close Jan. 2. PGA nominations will be announced Jan. 3. And final polls will close Jan. 20, just in advance of the Jan. 21 awards.
PGA board member Paula Wagner will once again chair the awards ceremony, which will take place at the Beverly Hilton, along with producer Michael Manheim.
