Brief Theatre History/Statement of Philosophy: In 1974, The Clarence Brown Theatre Company, a professional theatre company with membership in the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) and Theatre Communications Group, Inc. (TCG), was founded on the campus of the University of Tennessee, with Sir Anthony Quayle as Artistic Director. Today, the Clarence Brown Theatre Company presents a varied repertoire of plays featuring nationally and internationally known guest artists, making the Clarence Brown Theatre one of the finest theatres in the Southeastern region of the United States. The University of Tennessee is one of a select number of universities nationwide that are affiliated with a professional LORT theatre, allowing MFA candidates and undergraduates in theatre regular opportunities to work alongside professional actors, directors, and designers.
