  • Share:

James Garner is best known for his long-running, Emmy-winning series "The Rockford Files" and for acting opposite such luminaries as Marlon Brando, Julie Andrews, and Doris Day. What you may not know is that after suffering physical abuse from his stepmother he ran away from home at 14 and later became Oklahoma's first draftee in the Korean War. His new memoir "The Garner Files" exposes these aspects of his story and more. Garner's co-author, Jon Winokur, will talk about the book April 7, on Garner's 84th birthday. Book Soup, 8818 W. Sunset Blvd., L.A. 4 p.m. Free. (310) 659-3110 or www.booksoup.com.
