Jon Seda, Ashton Holmes and Rami Malek have joined the cast of HBO Films' big-budget "The Pacific." The miniseries is from executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
The actors join the previously cast James Badge Dale, Val Lauren and Joe Mazzello in the 10-hour mini, a companion piece to Hanks and Spielberg's Emmy-winning 2001 World War II saga "Band of Brothers" (HR 6/11).
"Pacific" tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines -- Robert Leckie (Dale), John Basilone (Lauren) and Eugene Sledge (Mazzello) -- across the vast canvas of the Pacific, from the first clash with the Japanese in the jungles of Guadalcanal to the triumphant return home after V-J Day.
Seda is set to play Rodriguez, a friend of Basilone. Holmes will play Sid Phillips, the best friend to Eugene who joins the Marines and is posted to the Pacific early in the war. Malek is playing Merriell "Snafu" Shelton, a small and excitable Lousianian who is initially hostile to Eugene.
"Pacific," which HBO Films is producing in association with Playtone and DreamWorks Television, starts shooting in August in Port Douglas, Australia. It will shoot there through year's end and then move to Melbourne. No airdate has yet been set for the mini, which also will air in Australia on Channel 7.
"Pacific" is based on the books "With the Old Breed" by Sledge and "Helmet for My Pillow" by Leckie as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers and Hugh Ambrose, son of "Brothers" author Stephen E. Ambrose, who died in 2002. Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries, which reportedly will cost nearly $200 million (HR 4/25).
Hanks and Spielberg are executive producing "Pacific" with Hanks' partner at Playtone, Gary Goetzman. Tony To and Graham Yost are co-executive producers.
Seda is known for his roles on such series as CBS' "Close to Home," playing Ray Blackwell, and NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street," in which he played Detective Paul Falsone. His credits also include CBS' "Ghost Whisperer," UPN's "Kevin Hill" and the film "One Long Night." He is repped by Gersh Agency and Abe Hoch of A Management.
Holmes recently wrapped the Miramax film "Smart People" opposite Dennis Quaid and Thomas Haden Church. His credits include the films "Wind Chill" and "Normal Adolescent Behavior." He is repped by ICM and manager Jeff Morrone.
Malek most recently appeared in the film "Night at the Museum" as Ahkmenrah, the Egyptian pharaoh. His credits include Fox's "The War at Home" and FX's "Over There." He is repped by Defining Artists and Kyle Fritz Management.
