Voiceovers: There's Money in Your Mouth

From animation to video games to audio books to commercials, voiceover work is one of the most lucrative gigs in show business. Casting directors and voiceover experts vocalize their tips on the etiquette of the voiceover business, the tools of the trade, the players and the process. Four participants will get the chance to do a live audition, and the panel will coach them on their reading (copy provided). Moderated by voiceover professional Joan Baker.

Johnna Gottlieb, NYU professor, "The Business of VO"
Johnna Gottlieb is an NYU professor and teaches "The Business of VO" as well as the UCLA extension online class "How to Become a Successful Voiceover Artist." She is the founder of Johnna Gottlieb Consulting. A former voiceover talent agent with 11 years of experience working for top agencies and vo talent, Johnna covers all the aspects of the voiceover trade for her clients: where to begin, how to get established, what it takes to make it and how to stay in the game.


Katie McGrath, voiceover agent, Innovative Arists
Katie McGrath is a voiceover agent with Innovative Artists. She represents actors specializing in voice-overs for TV promos, long-form narrations, animation, video games and audio books. Clients include top talent in the VO field.


Rudy Gaskins, executive creative director, Push Creative Advertising
Emmy Award winner Rudy Gaskins is executive creative director and CEO of Push Creative Advertising. He has directed the vocal musings of Barbara Walters, Bob Costas, Peter Jennings, Nancy Grace, Marv Albert, and Johnnie Cochran. Clients include NBC Sports, Spike TV, American Express, and Lexus.


Valerie Smaldone, voiceover actor

A five-time Billboard Magazine award winner, Valerie Smaldone has recorded over 1,000 television promos (NBC News, Cinemax, CBS, HBO), radio and TV spots (Publix supermarkets, Minute Maid, Easy Spirit), and has voiced numerous live events (CBS Pre-Tony show, Broadway on Broadway, the NY Emmys). Valerie teaches a course on how to develop a radio show at the School of Visual Arts and coaches voiceover talent.

Joan Baker is the author of "Secrets of Voice-Over Success: Top Voice-Over Actors Reveal How They Did It." Among Joan's achievements, she narrated for the permanent display of the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library and the national ad campaign for the Muhammad Ali Center. Other clients include ESPN, ABC News, NBC, Showtime, HBO, Imus in the Morning, Oprah.com, Sony Music, American Express, ABC Sports and the Olympic Games.
