Woody Allen to Film Next Movie in Rome
Though a Rome project for Allen has been rumored for some time, this is the first time Allen himself confirmed it. But he didn't elaborate much on the story line or the cast. "I'm too superstitious to do that at this stage," the newspaper quoted Allen as saying. "I'm still at the screenplay stage, and so it would be silly to say more."
If the film comes to fruition it will mark the latest in a series of European shoots for the iconic director, following "Match Point" (shot in London), "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (shot in Barcelona), and "Midnight in Paris," which was shot in the French capital and will be the opening film at the Cannes Film Festival May 11.
Allen compared Rome to some of his favorite big cities, including New York, Paris, London, and Barcelona.
"I love these sophisticated cities and it's fantastic to have the possibility to work there," he said. "Each time it is for me like a declaration of love for certain places. I try to project my feelings for places that are important to me onto the big screen."
Mediaset subsidiary Medusa is reported to be on board as co-producer of the project, but Medusa officials declined to comment on the report when contacted. If the deal comes through it would be the largest international production project for Medusa, which is indirectly controlled by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
The 75-year-old Allen will have a chance to do a little location scouting later this month: his New Orleans Jazz Band is scheduled to play at Auditorium Conciliazione Theatre, near the Vatican, on March 26.
