Broadway: Upcoming

Big Fish, a musical based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the 2003 film version, about a storytelling father and his skeptical son. Norbert Leo Butz will star in a pre-Broadway run in Chicago April 2–May 5. Susan Stroman directs and choreographs. Andrew Lippa (“The Addams Family”) writes the music and lyrics, and John August, who wrote the screenplay for the film, authors the book. The Big Knife, a revival of Clifford Odets’ 1949 drama about a Hollywood star facing a secret from his past. Bobby Cannavale stars in and Doug Hughes directs this production for Roundabout Theatre Company. Previews begin March 22. Opening night is April 16 for a limited run through June 2 at the American Airlines Theatre, 227 W. 42nd St., NYC. Casting and EPAs: TBA. 

First Date is a new musical comedy about tightly-wound Aaron who is set up on a blind date with cool girl Casey. Originally premiered at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. Austin Winsberg authors the book; music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner. Bill Berry directs and Josh Rhodes choreographs. Previews begin at the Longacre Theatre July 9. Opens Aug. 4. Casting TBA.

If/Then, David Stone’s new musical about a woman on the verge of turning 40 who moves to New York City for a fresh start. Starring Tony Award-winner Idina Menzel. Written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. Michael Greif directs. A Washington, D.C. pre-Broadway run planned before a Broadway debut in March 2014.

Jekyll and Hyde, a revival of the 1997 musical by Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel. Constantine Maroulis (“Rock of Ages”) and Deborah Cox star. Jeff Calhoun (“Newsies”) directs and choreographs. A national tour began Sept. 7 culminating in a Broadway run opening in April 2013 at the Richard Rodgers Theater. The Nance, Douglas Carter Beane’s new comedy about a campy burlesque performer played by Nathan Lane, also delves into the lonely and secretive world of homosexuals in 1930s New York. Previews start March 21 for an April 15 opening at the Lyceum Theatre; Jack O’Brien directs.

Orphans, a revival of Lyle Kessler’s 1983 play about two brothers kidnapping an older man. Alec Baldwin and ben Foster star. Daniel Sullivan directs. Previews begin March 19 for an April 1 opening. Casting: David Caparelliotis, Cap Casting, 260 W. 44th St., NYC 10036. Last EPAs: Oct. 1–3, 2012. 

Pippin, a revival of the 1972 musical by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson about a medieval prince seeking fulfillment. Diane Paulus directs. Previews begin March 23. Opens April 25 at the Music Box Theatre.

The Trip to Bountiful, a revival of the Horton Foote classic, finds Cicely Tyson returning to the Broadway stage while Cuba Gooding Jr. makes his Broadway debut. Also starring Vanessa Williams and Condola Rashad. Previews begin March 31 for an April 23 opening at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre; Michael Wilson directs. 

 

Broadway: Limited Engagements Currently Playing

The Assembled Parties, a new play by Richard Greenberg, will star Jessica Hecht and Judith Light in a story about a search for stability among members of an Upper West Side Jewish family. Previews begin March 19 for an April 17 opening at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater. Lynne Meadow directs. Casting TBA.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, a revival of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize–winning 1955 play. Previews began Dec. 18, 2012, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and opened Jan. 17. Closing night is set for March 30. Rob Ashford directs; Scarlett Johansson and Benjamin Walker star. Casting: Daniel Swee. Last EPAs for Gooper and Mae: Aug. 17, 2012.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, after a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run last year, Christopher Durang’s comedic interpretation of Anton Chekov’s play stars Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce and Kristine Nielsen. Directed by Nicholas Martin. Opening night is March 14 with a 17-week run at the John Golden Theatre.

Ann, a new play written and performed by Holland Taylor about the life of former Texas governor Ann Richards. Opened March 7 at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, 150 W. 65th St.

Annie, a revival of the 1977 musical based on the comic-strip character Little Orphan Annie. James Lapine (“Into the Woods”) directs. Opened Nov. 8 at the Palace Theatre, 1564 Broadway, NYC. Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a new adaptation of the Truman Capote novella by Richard Greenberg, will star Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”) as Holly Golightly and Corey Michael Smith as Fred under the direction of Sean Mathias. Opens March 20 at the Cort Theatre. Casting: Ilene Starger and Zoe E. Rotter. Last EPAs: Nov. 29, 2012.

Hands on a Hard Body, a new musical based on the 1997 documentary about a Texas endurance contest with a hard-body pickup truck as the prize. Doug Wright (“Grey Gardens”) authors the book; music is by Trey Anastasio of the rock group Phish and Amanda Green, who also writes the lyrics. Neil Pepe directs. A production played the La Jolla Playhouse May 12–June 17, 2012. Previews for the Broadway production began Feb. 23 for a March 21 opening at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with the La Jolla cast intact. Kinky Boots, a musical version of the 2005 film comedy about a British drag queen. Jerry Mitchell (“Legally Blonde”) directs. Harvey Fierstein (“La Cage aux Folles”) is writing the book, and pop star and actor Cyndi Lauper is responsible for the score. Opening on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre April 4. Lucky Guy, a play by Nora Ephron based on the life of reporter Mike McAlary, stars Tom Hanks under the direction of George C. Wolfe. Previews began March 1 for an April 1 opening at the Broadhurst Theatre. Casting: Jordan Thaler and Heidi Griffiths. Last EPAs: Oct. 3 and 4, 2012.

Matilda, the Musical, a new musical based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel about a girl with extraordinary powers. The book is by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Australian comedian-composer Tim Minchin. Matthew Warchus (“God of Carnage”) directs. Previews began March 4 for an April 11 opening at the Shubert Theatre. The Royal Shakespeare Company production is currently playing in London’s West End. Motown, a musical based on the life of Motown mogul Berry Gordy. Broadway production begins rehearsals on or about Jan. 14. Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, a new production of the duo’s 1957 TV musical based on the classic fairy tale, with a new book by Douglas Carter Beane (“Lysistrata Jones”), songs from the original production, and other songs from the R&H canon. Aladdin, a musical based on the Disney animated film of the same name, follows the story of street urchin whose fortune changes with one rub of a magical lamp. Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs. Alan Menkin writes the music. Pre-Broadway engagement at Toronto’s Mirvish Theatre premieres Nov. 13 with a run through Jan. 12, 2014. Honeymoon in Vegas, a musical version of the 1992 film comedy about a couple whose wedding plans are ruined by a gambler. Jason Robert Brown (“Parade,” “The Last Five Years”) wrote the music and lyrics; Andrew Bergman, director and screenwriter of the original film, wrote the book. A private workshop was held in New York in late October 2011 with T.R. Knight, Mary Faber, and Tony Danza. Target Broadway opening: Spring 2013. Prince of Broadway, a new revue with numbers from musicals produced and/or directed by Harold Prince (“Cabaret,” “Follies,” “Sweeney Todd,” etc.). Prince will co-direct with Susan Stroman. Tuck Everlasting, a musical based on the 1975 children’s book about an immortal family, with a book by Claudia Shear (“Dirty Blonde”) and music and lyrics by Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen (“The Burnt Part Boys”). Casey Nicholaw (“The Book of Mormon,” “The Drowsy Chaperone”) directs and choreographs. A pre-Broadway run is planned for May 26–June 15, 2013, in Boston. Target Broadway opening: 2013–14 season.
