THE PIANO TEACHER

  • Share:

at South Coast Repertory

The aging Mrs. K. (Linda Gehringer) starts with a cozy chat from her armchair, offering cookies to the audience as she muses about her life and the delights of her years teaching children to appreciate and play the piano. As if it were a sudden thought, she goes to the phone and calls former pupils to see how they are getting on. One of the students, Mary Fields (Toi Perkins), prompted by an invitation, drops by. Hints of uneasiness with the lessons and Mr. K. are delicately revealed. As the first act concludes, it is clear that more is going on than recalled by Mrs. K.'s rosy-hued reminiscences.
