The New York Television Festival, LACMA’s 2012 Art + Film Gala, Brian Stokes Mitchell’s album of Broadway classics, the ballet documentary “First Position” on DVD, and Halloween are what we’re looking forward to this week.
Theater for the New City
Though playwright-performer John Jiler deals provocatively with the subject of death in his one-man play “Ripe,” at Theater for the New City, the show is vibrant with life.
Using flamingos in a Miami park to symbolize society’s malaise, Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas’ “Bird in the Hand,” from Fulcrum Theater, though idea heavy, is a witty, often moving show.
Dream Up is a festival dedicated exclusively to new works of a nontraditional bent. It eschews the well-made play, and hopes for pieces focused more on ideas, and that use “roads less traveled or undiscovered” to communicate those ideas.
